𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐖𝐞 𝐖𝐞𝐫𝐞. 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐖𝐞 𝐀𝐫𝐞. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐍𝐞𝐱𝐭. 𝐀𝐧𝐝 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐖𝐞 𝐇𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐓𝐨 𝐃𝐨!

Friends, I'm not going to give you an academic lecture. What I am going to do is give you a gut-check, because it's getting real! This is straight talk about where our country has been headed, what it means for your daily life, and what we can do about it.

𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐞 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞.

Politics didn’t just “get rough” in the last few years; no, it’s been a slow boil. Back in the 1990s, party leaders started treating political opponents like enemies. In 2013, the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act, and states wasted no time making it harder to vote. Then came January 6th, a violent attempt to overturn an election, followed by mass pardons for those who attacked our democracy. Add to that a Supreme Court ruling giving presidents new immunity from crimes they commit in office, and we’re watching the idea of “nobody is above the law” crumble.

𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞.

We still hold elections, for now, but the guardrails are very weak! Plans like “Project 2025” are about reshaping government into one-party control by firing career public servants and replacing them with political loyalists. That’s not speculation, it’s already being implemented. Other democracies like Hungary went down this road, and it didn’t stop with speeches or protests; it ended with the people losing their say. That's where we're headed!

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞.

This isn’t abstract. It’s about your paycheck, your health, and your children and grandchildren's future!! Here’s what authoritarian drift looks like in real life:

- Your state decides whether your daughter has reproductive rights, or whether she has to travel hundreds of miles for care. 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐤, 𝐚𝐥𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐝

- Your local school board bans books and censors history classes, leaving your kids with a sanitized version of America. 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐤, 𝐚𝐥𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐝

- Your job protections shrink, and your union rights vanish, so corporations can squeeze more from you while giving less back. 𝐀𝐥𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲 𝐛𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠!

- Your Social Security and Medicare get chipped away in the name of “reform,” while tax breaks go to billionaires. 𝐀𝐥𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲 𝐛𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠!

- Protests that used to be part of democracy get treated like crimes. Imagine your neighbor losing his job because he marched in a demonstration. 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐟𝐚𝐫-𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐝, 𝐢𝐭’𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲!

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐬𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐥𝐢𝐝𝐞.

We’ve seen bright spots: voters in states like Ohio and Kansas protected abortion rights directly on the ballot, but the Republican legislatures are hard at work figuring out ways to claw those wins back.

Courts have, at times, stood up to power grabs. Congress tightened rules to stop another January 6th-style coup. And people, over 7 million of them, took to the streets for NoKings protests, showing that when everyday Americans rise up, the whole world notices! That’s what democracy looks like! It's 𝐖𝐄 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐏𝐄𝐎𝐏𝐋𝐄!

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐭.

𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐭-𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦: expect more restrictions, more executive overreach, and more rights decided state by state.

𝐋𝐨𝐧𝐠-𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦: either we watch rights erode, zip code by zip code, until we barely recognize this country, or we step up and we actually fight for reforms that secure voting, fair maps, and independent courts. There is no autopilot. You don’t drift into freedom, you drift into tyranny!

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐝𝐨, 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐧𝐨𝐰.

- 𝐉𝐨𝐢𝐧 𝐚 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐩. Groups like Indivisible, 50501, and others are where the organizing happens. Don’t just “like” a post, sign up, show up, and bring a friend. Do it Today!

- 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐩𝐮𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐞. When the call goes out, like NoKings Day, 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐮𝐩!!! These aren’t random rallies. They’re pressure points that shift the national conversation.

- 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐲. Volunteer as a poll worker. Support local journalists who keep corruption in check. Show up at school board meetings so Moms for Liberty types don’t run them unchecked.

- 𝐅𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐲𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐯𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬. Push for independent redistricting commissions and fair voting laws in your state. These are the rules that decide who holds power.

- 𝐇𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬!!! Talk to neighbors, coworkers, and family. Not everyone watches MSNBC or Fox. Most people get their cues from people they trust. 𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘴 𝘠𝘖𝘜!

- 𝐁𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐢𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐰𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐭. Donate to organizations fighting for rights.

    - 𝐋𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐣𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐦: Subscribe to or donate to your local newspaper (like Akron Beacon Journal or Canton Repository). Local reporting keeps corruption in check more than any national outlet ever will.

     - 𝐕𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐩𝐬: Fair Fight (founded by Stacey Abrams), Brennan Center for Justice, and Common Cause fight gerrymandering, voter suppression, and election subversion.

      - 𝐂𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐥 𝐥𝐢𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬: The ACLU, NAACP Legal Defense Fund, and Planned Parenthood all fight in court for rights the rest of us take for granted.

      - 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭 + 𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞: Indivisible and MoveOn are obvious, but smaller groups like 50501 and state-level coalitions (Ohio Voice, or Vote Blue for example) stretch dollars far because they’re close to the ground.

     - 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬’ 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬: Support your local union strike funds, or donate to the AFL-CIO’s Solidarity Center. Strong unions equal strong democracy.

      - 𝐀𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐟𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐬: National Network of Abortion Funds or state-level groups (like Women Have Options in Ohio) directly cover travel and medical costs for women in hostile states.

A few bucks a month matters!!!!!

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐝𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠.

If we sit on our hands, we get the slow-motion Hungary outcome: elections in name only, rights that depend on your ZIP code, a government staffed by loyalists instead of professionals, and a future where your children and grandchildren grow up with fewer freedoms than you had!! That’s the road we’re on if we don’t turn the wheel.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥.

Sign up! Show up! Talk to people outside your bubble. Protect the people who run our elections. Join groups that organize, not just gripe. And when the next protest comes, lace up your shoes and get off your ass and get out there!!!!

𝐍𝐨𝐛𝐨𝐝𝐲’𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐮𝐬. 𝘐𝘵’𝘴 𝘰𝘯 𝘶𝘴. And if we step up, we can still write a different ending to this story, but it doesn't happen without 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐃𝐎𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐒𝐎𝐌𝐄𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐍𝐆!
